Seminar Description

Product ownership is a team sport. It is also a crucial and complex activity; easy in principle, hard in practice. Your role is an important part of any product development approach, irrespective of the approach being taken.  As a product owner, you require clarity of vision, alignment with organizational strategy, understanding of the development process and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders across all levels, both inside and outside the organization. This 2-day course will show you how to combine your existing skills with agile tools and techniques. The content focuses on roles in the value management team, and how they collaborate to identify the most important aspects and features of a product. You will provide guidance for technical team members who build the working product. The content covers how to bound your product and understand the business value it provides, identify the key features of the product and organize those features by value, and create a product roadmap.  The course also teaches how to write themes, epics and user stories and how to groom and elaborate in order to be ready for sprint planning. This means you’ll be better equipped to deliver value, manage all of the stakeholder wish lists, and ensure the project team knows what they’re building. 


What You Will Learn

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities involved in product ownership
  • Learn how to use a number of tools to help identify which products should be built to maximize business value using tools such as purpose alignment model, kano analysis, and business objectives models
  • Understand how to build a product roadmap and link that to business outcomes
  • Learn how to use a number of tools to help identify which products should be built to maximize business value using tools such as purpose alignment model, kano analysis, and business objectives model
  • Apply personas to help define features and quality goals for building a product roadmap
  • Use paper prototyping and usability heuristics to guide the design of the product
  • Understand the shape of a well-formed backlog and how to populate it progressively
  • Learn and execute techniques such as story mapping, prioritization and backlog grooming to build a release plan
  • Elaborate stories for development on a just-in-time basis while ensuring the design principles and architectural guidelines are adhered to

Joy Beatty is a Vice President at Seilevel, a professional services company whose mission is to define software that customers love to use. The Seilevel team provides business analyst and product management services for F1000 companies across the US. They also help customers who want to modify their approach to software requirements to be more effective, so IT projects deliver their intended business value. Joy has provided training to thousands of business analysts and is PMI-PBA® and CBAP® certified.
 
Joy is actively involved as a leader in the requirements community. She was a co-author of PMI’s Business Analysis for Practitioners: A Practice Guide, is a contributing author to PMI’s new business analysis standard,  and a core team for the IIBA’s Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) version 3. Joy graduated from Purdue University with Bachelors of Science degrees in both Computer Science and Mathematics. She co-authored Visual Models for Software Requirements, with Anthony Chen from Seilevel, and Software Requirements, 3rd Edition with the famed Karl Wiegers.
